Look, you misunderstood me.

I think we should go after this guy because he is an anti-American prick
who has actively targeted the U.S. and nobody else. He is purposefully
targeting the U.S. Thus far he has not leaked anything important. But
because he is continually targeting the U.S., maybe in the future he will
leak something really important. That is why he is dangerous. Also, his
revelation that he is going to reveal all documents, even redacted names,
if he is put on trial for sexual assault in Sweden, just shows that he is
dangerous. Revealing those names then does become espionage. He is no
longer just making "news", he is targeting U.S. government employees. Fuck
him.

But...

I am not going to stand by the claim that "But that is BS, these documents
were stolen and published illegally." Fine. So put the people who stole
them in jail. But what do you mean "published illegally."? There is very
little out there that constitutes "illegal publication". Publishing stolen
documents is actually not illegal. It is their theft in the first place
that is illegal. But publishing them is protected by the First Amendment,
which I think is more important than both the secrets themselves or this
douchebag's rights. Lots of good has come out of leaks (thus my comment
about the Pentagon Papers). That doesn't mean one should encourage the
leaks, but you can't prosecute someone just for leaking them. Think about
what would happen next time someone leaks something to the press? We need
that room to maneuver. It is necessary in a democracy.
So anyways, I am not so worried about the "leaking" part. That has
happened before and will happen again. Hell, even the idea of Wikileaks is
a good one. Whistelblowers can go to this site and feel safe to reveal
things people should know about... such as if a Chinese company is using
fake milk or if some farmer is leaking mercury into a stream. There have
actually been cases like that leaked to Wikileaks... so it is not all this
secret supposedly spy stuff.

The problem, however, is that this idiot is so anti-American and is on a
mission to build a pyramid to his own ego. That is the real issue here.
His ego and anti-Americanism. And I think we need to remove him one way
or another before that drive leads him to publishing something truly
damaging, putting U.S. government employees in danger.

But the act of publishing leaked information has been the bedrock of
American investigative journalism. You can't fault the concept because he
is a douche. And you can't go against our own First Amendment because he
is a douche.

Yeah but my point was that the common folk are not outraged except at
Assange. He wanted people to be outraged at the government. Nobody is, in
fact most people think the diplomats are doing their job. That's a change
considering what low opinion most people have of diplomats.

And as for my comment about wikileaks, I was being far more philosophical
than the question of whether it is illegal or not. From time to time, you
got to leak some stuff... it's just the way it is. It's good for the
country. Doesn't feel nice, but it's good. Like jogging.

But my overall point here is that Assange is just an anti-American prick
who things he is going to leak some stuff that leaves the American people
outraged. What an idiot. As Stewart said the other night, this is the
country that sold weapons to Iran so that we can fund right-wing
guerrillas in Central America. And this idiot thought we would be outraged
by someone calling Merkel "risk-averse".

He is a fucking idiot.

Queensland= Aussie Texas. Y'all have an attitude that Alabamans don't.

Last I saw Assange was charged with sexual assault, not rape. That's
different in the US, obviously, but no idea about Sweden.

And Marko, I beg to differ. The leaks are wrong. Are they seriously
damaging? No, but that doesn't make it OK. Serious laws were violated
here, and the only reason they have some freedom of movement is because
Wikileaks (presumably) is not state-sponsored and claim to be some sort of
journalism. But that is BS, these documents were stolen and published
illegally. We can go into the whole argument of overclassification- and
be right to say that most of this stuff should no longer be classified.
That does not change the fact that the documents were classified. Some
sort of civil disobedience is not going to change the USG's culture of
secrecy. That idea by Assange is just ludicrous. This is just an
NGO-version of espionage and everyone involved should be arrested and
tried accordingly (and disrupted if we can't get them to court).

What Matt said about a large number of the American right being pretty
pissed off about these is also true. Assange has been called a terrorist
many times, I think Palin wanted to hunt him down.

Oh the teaching is still first rate and turned me in to the intellectual
Adonis that I am. Was just that the majority of the company there sucked.
Nestled between Glebe and Newtown since their gentrification hasn't
helped, I don't think. Thank god for the Landsdowne Hotel!!

If you think you're going to get any argument out of me on Usyd you're
going to be disappointed.
The place was full of left wing socialist wankers or college boy, Aviator
wearing, popped collar rich kids.
Going to hazard a guess that Assange may also have studied there as well.
Queensland is Australia's version of Alabama, only with better beaches.

It is possible to revoke citizenship on the grounds of being a dickhead
except in Australia, where all of Queensland and a good part of South
Australia, along with all of Sydney Uni would lose their passports.

I don't care about the other leaks but the ones he has made that
potentially damage Australian interests upset me.
If I thought I could switch this dickhead off without getting done I
don't think I'd have too much of a problem.
BTW, close family friend in Sweden who knows the girl that is pressing
charges tells me that there is absolutely nothing behind it other than
prosecutors that are looking to make a name for themselves. My friend
speaks rather disparagingly about the girl who is claiming molestation.
I also think the whole rape thing is incorrect for if I remember
correctly rape was never the charge.

What a douche.

And I just want to be clear here... I have no problem with the leaks. I
think they're great. And I think it may be good on some level to have
stuff like this come out once in a while. What I can't stand is A) his
ego trip and B) his clear anti-Americanism. Take the time to read the
intro to Cablegate when you get the chance. This guy hates America more
than OBL.

What I love, however, is how nobody in the U.S. is mad about the cables.
Hell, I have a better opinion of State Department diplomats now than I
did before the cables. They actually said a few smart things here and
there. I actually gave them a tip of my hat.

I want to see him try to take on the Russians. He'd be going bald in an
Iceland hospital within days.

Predictive, insightful intelligence...in a post-Cablegate world.

Also, I have a question about this part (this is Assange's lawyer
saying how Wikileaks would release full versions of all files
including names of spies, etc. if harmed):

WikiLeaks, Mr. Stephens said, has a**been subject to cyberattacks and
censorship around the world and they need to protect themselves ... This
is what they believe to be a thermonuclear device in the information
age.a**

Let's say the following scenario happens. Assange is arrested and
extradicted to Sweden to face rape charges. Wikileaks releases the
password to the insurance files. Would he not then be directly
endangering U.S. and other country intelligence professionals? Would
it not then be possible to prosecute him for espionage?
